Abstract
Though there is now a growing body of research on entrepreneurial turnaround, little effort has been made to integrate emergent knowledge that remains highly fragmented and inconsistent. To address these issues, we explore and analyze the literature on entrepreneurial turnaround by systematically reviewing 71 articles published on the topic from 1975 to 2023. We do so by conducting computer-based bibliometric analysis to draw maps of the conceptual building blocks found in this literature. Our study contributes to the literature by clarifying the nomological network and presenting the state of the field, which will enable further theoretical advances. In addition, we objectively detect knowledge clusters and, through science mapping, detect gaps in the intellectual structure of this field of study. Finally, we display how future studies may build upon our work to advance entrepreneurial turnaround research by discussing emerging research themes as well as best practices for rigorous research on entrepreneurial turnaround. Our analysis of the literature shows that the field of study of entrepreneurial turnaround is burgeoning and that the topic is increasingly attracting scholarly interest. However, advances in the field will require embracing a unifying research agenda along with adherence to empirical and theoretical best practices.
