Abstract
Juan shook my hand and sat in one of the maroon office chairs that surrounded
the large table in the conference room near my office on campus. He wore
tight black jeans with matching Vans and a baggy sweatshirt with his high school’s
name embroidered across the chest. Juan was the type of student that teachers
love-a hardworking, compliant teenager who wanted to please. He finished
the first semester of his senior year the week prior and eagerly looked forward
to high school graduation. “I want to be a doctor,” he smiled as he spoke about
serving his community in the future. Although confident and outgoing around
friends, Juan took a more submissive role with authority figures.
