Abstract
Parental divorce is among the most prevalent stressful adversities that children experience. This transition in family structure confers risk for problems in multiple domains of children’s and adolescents’ functioning. In this chapter, the risks associated with parental divorce and the interventions designed to reduce children’s post-divorce mental health problems are discussed. Then, a theoretical model of moderation of intervention effects is presented and the findings on moderators of these effects are reviewed. Next, theoretical models of mediation of program effects and findings on mediating mechanisms are presented. The chapter ends with recommendations for future research on moderators and mediators of intervention effects for this group of at-risk youths and implications of the research findings for clinical practice.
