Abstract
Purpose. The purpose of the study was to identify and describe the characteristics of the Latina California community college presidents that provided the foundation for their ascendancy to the presidency, including their personal life history, educational experiences, career paths, essential skills, and leadership strategies. Methodology. The researcher used descriptive research. The population consisted of the Latina California community college presidents. The case study was conducted utilizing a series of interviews. These interviews were then transcribed and analyzed. The data were then complied into domains and themes for further analysis. The qualitative data were gathered to elicit descriptions of their perceptions of success factors. Findings. This study found the subjective realities from childhood through adulthood and discovered many factors that contribute to a Latina attaining a presidency. The following commonalities emerged from the study population: (1) identified a significant family member as role model, (2) all had been married and considered their husbands' support an essential factor in their success, (3) had a community service orientation, (4) strong interest in policy implementation, (5) possessed a drive to achieve and challenge themselves, (6) defined their leadership style as participatory and shared decision making. Discrimination emerged as an experience that all of the presidents encountered, and which provided valuable lessons and motivation. These women viewed discrimination as a challenge, something they must disprove, and not validate others' preconceived notions. Conclusions and recommendations. Based upon the results of this study, a projected profile of a Latina California community college president will possess the following qualities: (1) will probably be of the Catholic religion, (2) married often to a non-Hispanic male, (3) be bilingual and bicultural, (4) among the first generation in her family to be college educated. The California community college presidency is a relatively new career path for Latinas. Further research may explore the longevity of Latinas in this high-profile, volatile position and how future Latinas could prepare for this journey.
