Data from sources were analyzed to document the use of emotional intelligent leadership behaviors throughout Eleanor Roosevelt's leadership experience from 1936 to 1962. Findings. (1) The use of emotional literacy, as demonstrated through the behavior of emotional honesty, was an integral element of Eleanor Roosevelt's leadership style. (2) The use of emotional fitness, as demonstrated through the behavior of authentic presence, was an integral element of Eleanor Roosevelt's leadership style. (3) The use of emotional depth, as demonstrated through the behavior of applied integrity, was an integral element of Eleanor Roosevelt's leadership style. (4) The use of emotional alchemy, as demonstrated through the behavior of creating the future, was an integral element of Eleanor Roosevelt's leadership style. Conclusions and recommendations. Anna Eleanor Roosevelt serves as a historical model of successful leadership that included the use of emotional intelligence in leadership behavior. The inclusion of the affective portion of the brain created an effective leadership style that can be emulated by present day and future leadership. There are five recommendations for future leaders. The first recommendation is to include the use of emotional honesty as a component of leadership that demonstrates emotional literacy or a basic knowledge and understanding of feelings. Second, future leaders should include authentic presence as a component of leadership that demonstrates emotional fitness, or the willingness to be emotionally open with others. Third, future leaders should apply integrity as a component of leadership that demonstrates emotional depth, or the ability to model beliefs and values. Finally, future leaders should create the future by demonstrating emotional alchemy or the use of emotions in future vision and growth.
