Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this research based on two case studies of exemplary programs was to identify strategies and activities that lead to successful first-year community college experiences. Theoretical Framework. The theories used in the study include the following: (a) instructional theories for higher education; (b) learning theories; (c) Kirkpatrick's 4 levels of evaluation; and (d) experimental learning theory. Methodology. By utilizing a mixed methods approach of a case study and a thematic analysis on the interviews with the participants, the researcher established meaningful findings on the central research question of determining what strategies and practices of community college First Year Experience and student transition programs assist in developing and fostering student engagement. Findings. Eight main experiences and perceptions were gathered: (a) First Year Experience and student transition programs should pursue a quality enhancement plan; (b) The kind of environment that First Year Experience and student transition programs should maintain is one that is flexible enough to get the students involved; (c) First Year Experience and student transition programs should pursue the strategy of developing more faculty-student collaborations; (d) The assessment tools that First Year Experience and student transition programs should observe are characteristics and competencies set by the school; (e) The schools must start with the constant evaluation of the faculty members and the programs; (f) Feedback from alumni should be collected as well; (g) The level of engagement that First Year Experience and student transition programs should require is one that provides the students the chance to see and experience collaboration, partnerships, and relationships outside the school; and finally, (h) Policy should be formed or maintained to ward off any hindrances experienced by the institution in fulfilling its mission. Conclusion and Recommendations. The researcher concluded that First Year Experience and student transition programs are the future of America's community colleges.
