Abstract
Purpose. This study investigates how collaboration strategies enhance innovation capabilities within Chinese biopharma companies, focusing on the impact of external partnerships, knowledge sharing, and internationalization strategies on innovation outcomes.
Theoretical Framework. The study is grounded in the Resource-Based View (RBV) and Dynamic Capabilities Theory, which emphasize the strategic use of valuable resources and the ability to adapt and reconfigure resources to sustain competitive advantage. Additionally, the research incorporates Knowledge Management Theory and Social Capital Theory to explore the role of tacit and explicit knowledge sharing in innovation.
Methodology. The study employs a qualitative research design, involving in-depth interviews with 20 key executives and managers from leading Chinese biopharma companies. NVivo software was used to conduct thematic analysis on the interview data, identifying key themes related to collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation.
Findings. The analysis reveals that external collaborations significantly enhance innovation capabilities through resource complementarity and dynamic capability building. Strategic partnerships with multinational corporations (MNCs) provide access to advanced technologies, market insights, and regulatory expertise. Knowledge sharing, both explicit and tacit, plays a crucial role in fostering innovation. Internationalization strategies, supported by strategic alliances, enhance market access and innovation capabilities, enabling Chinese biopharma companies to achieve long-term competitive advantage.
Conclusions and Recommendations. The study concludes that collaboration is essential for enhancing innovation capabilities in Chinese biopharma companies. It recommends fostering a collaborative ecosystem, investing in adaptive learning and alliance management capabilities, and promoting internationalization strategies. Future research should explore longitudinal studies and the impact of emerging technologies on collaboration and innovation.
