Abstract
Purpose. The purpose of this study was to explore and analyze the strategies used by successful Hispanic professional immigrants that enabled them to achieve professional success in Southern California. It was essential to analyze how they went through actions, applied experiences, articulated values, and exploited strategies to determine their personal pathways to professional practice and community leadership. Methodology. Six participants from different professions and Hispanic countries were recommended by cultural and social organizations in Southern California as appropriate candidates for this qualitative study. The first contact with them was by phone to ensure their eligibility and willingness to be part of this study. Then, they were engaged in 1- to 2-hour semistructured interviews to address the research questions. All interviews were transcribed; the data were coded and analyzed. Findings and Conclusions. The findings of this study illustrate that each participant traveled on a different pathway to achieve professional success, although similarities did exist across participants. The influences of family and cultural background, political turmoil, and social and economic instability in their countries coerced them to reshape their personal and professional lives outside of their native countries. Throughout the process of finding the opportunity to exercise their profession in Southern California, they encountered numerous obstacles, similar to those faced by any other immigrant. The study revealed that each participant exerted a singular and effective approach to overcome barriers, developing particular strategies to conquer obstacles, make a difference, and succeed. Recommendations. Further research should include larger samples of Hispanic professional immigrants who, in spite of their professions obtained in their country of origin, are also successful professionals in California. Also, it is recommended that the study consider the participants' age and amount of time they have lived in the United States.
