Abstract
The present study examined the parenting styles of Latino parents and the effects of acculturation on parenting. Participants completed questionnaires which included (1) the Demographic section, (2) The Bidimensional Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (BAS) (Marin & Gamba, 1996), and (3) the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) (Buri, 1991). The participants of this study were able to choose to complete the questionnaires in either English or Spanish. The three parenting styles: Authoritarian, Authoritative, and Permissive were examined along with acculturation level of a parent. The present study obtained a middle-class sample of bicultural Latino parents in Southern California whom tended to present with an authoritative parenting style. It appears that the permissiveness scale was practically non-existent in this sample (n=100). The results of this study yielded no significant results primarily due to a skewed distribution. The sampling method used to obtain data was a convenience sample, which may have contributed to the skewed distribution.
