Abstract
Purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine to what degree of fidelity the procedural, social, and academic elements of the Link Crew Transition Program have been implemented, as perceived by the program advisors. The second purpose of this study was to determine if there is a significant difference in schools' Academic Performance Index (API) growth scores, the level of proficiency in ninth-grade California Standards Test scores in English, dropout rates, truancy rate, and suspension rates when compared to the degree of fidelity to which The Link Crew Transition Program has been implemented. Methodology. This was an ex post facto and descriptive study. The population and sample for this study consisted of 110 Link Crew Advisors in California public high schools located in 11 California counties. Data were collected from 81 Link Crew Transition Advisors through a locator survey. Additionally, archival data were collected from the California Department of Education website. Findings. Both substantially (n=27) and partially (n=54) implemented program schools have the orientation component implemented with a high degree of fidelity. Lack of resources in the form of additional staff and money was a limiting factor to the success of the LCTP. Program advisors reported that Link Leaders, as well as freshmen, develop a sense of belonging and connectedness with the school as a result of program participation. There were no significant differences between substantially and partially implemented LCTP schools and school success indicators. Conclusions. This study did not find any significant difference in the success factors of substantially and partially implemented schools. Qualitative data reveal a positive experience for transitioning freshmen, the development of a sense of belonging, and the development of leadership qualities for the Link Leaders. Link Crew Advisors shared insightful information about their programs and offered suggestions and reflections. Recommendations. Although this study did not link academic success indicators with the Link Crew Transition Program, literature supports providing transitioning ninth grade students with social support and information about high school. Making a commitment to support a transition program with necessary resources increase the chances of success.
