Abstract
Purpose. The purpose of this study was to analyze charter school teachers' perceptions of relationships between the degree of empowerment given by principals/directors and the degree of teamness in their organizations, as measured by Harvey and Drolet's (2004) Survey of Team Characteristics and Empowerment Profile. Methodology. The researcher replicated a study, which applied a descriptive and correlational analysis data, which included independent charter school teachers in the County of Los Angeles, California. Harvey and Drolet's (2004) Survey of Team Characteristics and Empowerment Profile were instruments used in the collection of data. Data gathered were entered into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, uploaded into the IBM Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Statistics (Version 23), and analyzed using a bivariate correlation. SPSS 23 also calculated data for the mean, standard deviation, and frequency distributions separately for the Survey of Team Characteristics and the Empowerment Profile, as well as the overall correlation of the two instruments. Findings. All 17 characteristics of effective teams and the empowerment principles in this study were revealed to be very characteristic of the sample population. This research did not indicate a positive or negative analysis of the relationship between the combined characteristics of effective teams to the overall empowerment profile. Conclusions. Team characteristics and empowerment principles are independent concepts of each other. Organizations can develop effective teams without empowering members, just as empowering members can be established without building of effective teams. Recommendations. Provide leaders with the assessment tools necessary to reflect, solicit honest feedback, and empower within their organizations by eliminating micromanagement practices and building an environment where members are valued, mutual trust is developed, intrapreneurship is inspired, and shared common goals are established to reach organizational success.
