Abstract
Purpose. The purpose of this study was to identify and explain the best practices used by the leadership team of Teacher Bound when assisting Latina/o students to excel in the program and transfer into a 4-year university and how these best practices are successfully implemented and measured. Methodology. A qualitative case study was conducted to investigate the best practices of the Teacher Bound program from the perspective of the leadership team. The logic model was applied as the conceptual framework to identify the best practices. The selection of the site and sample were purposeful. Data were collected through 1-on-1 interviews and documents that were provided by the leadership of the program. Findings. The findings of this case study identified that Teacher Bound exercises 20 best practices that fall under 5 constructs. Four best practices are associated with the construct of transformational leadership, 3 with authentic leadership, 4 under the construct of Latina/o social and cultural support, 5 under academic support and preparation, and 4 best practices within the construct of organizational culture. Sixteen of the best practices exercised by the leadership of Teacher Bound assist Latina/o students to excel in the program. Nine best practices exercised by the leadership of Teacher Bound assist Latina/o students enroll in 4-year universities. The data showed that the leadership of Teacher Bound successfully administers 13 of the best practices. Answering the 4th research question, 7 of the best practices showed promise to be measured by the leadership team. Conclusions. The best practices found through this case study provide a holistic development of the Latina/o student. The 20 best practices emphasize that the holistic development of students is complex and multilayered. Leaders are encouraged to use this resource to elevate the academic participation and success of Latina/o students. Recommendations. Recommendations to improve this study include examining Teacher Bound's career technical pathway; examining in more detail how these 20 best practices are administered and measured; and collecting other perspectives on the Teacher Bound program by conducting studies on current and former students and partners of Teacher Bound.
