ABSTRACTPurpose. This study explored the role of newcomer academies in supporting the academic and social integration of migrant and refugee students in public PK–8 schools. As the number of unaccompanied minors and newly arrived immigrant students continues to rise, many school districts are struggling to provide adequate services, prompting the need to investigate effective support structures. Theoretical Framework. This research was grounded in Latino critical race theory (LatCrit), which emphasizes the intersection of race, immigration status, language, and cultural identity in the educational experiences of Latinx and immigrant students. LatCrit provides a lens through which the experiences of newcomer students can be understood and advocates for counter-narratives that highlight resilience and systemic inequities. Methodology. This qualitative study utilized interviews with counselors, social workers, and support staff working in newcomer academies or equivalent support programs. Participants provided their perspectives on the challenges faced by newcomer students and the effectiveness of targeted interventions. Data were analyzed to identify themes related to academic progress, emotional well-being, social integration, and institutional support. Findings and Conclusions. Findings highlighted the critical role of newcomer academies in addressing educational gaps caused by interrupted formal education, trauma, and language barriers. These programs are designed to provide culturally responsive instruction, emotional support, and inclusive environments that promote a sense of belonging. The study offers insights into best practices and gaps in implementation that affect newcomer outcomes. Recommendations. Based on the study findings, recommendations focus on enhancing school-based supports, expanding funding for specialized programs, increasing professional development for educators, and promoting family and community partnerships. The results may inform future educational policy and leadership decisions aimed at improving equity and access for newcomer and refugee students.
