Abstract
Problem: The level of increased accountability is constantly increasing due to the rapid changes in the Head Start program. Therefore leadership development is critical for Head Start to develop agile leaders that will create alternative solutions and lead their organizations to meet the challenges that lie ahead. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess leadership skills and behaviors of Head Start Leaders in California, and identify future skills and behaviors the leaders report they will need in order to continue their roles as Head Start Leaders. Methodology: The study was a descriptive research using quantitative and qualitative data. The subjects in this study were Head Start Leaders from 3 regions in the State of California. A survey was created, field tested and then revised to meet the final criteria of the research goal. The information from the survey was collected and analyzed to report the findings of this study. Findings: The study examined the Three Key Leadership Arenas relevant to Head Start Leaders to determine which levels of Leadership Agility may be built upon for their future success. Conclusions: The study data reports the recognition for the need for continued leadership development for Head Start Leaders to be able to continue in their roles in the future and face the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The key arenas that can be utilized in leading organizations are Leading Organizational Change, Improving Team Performance, and Engaging in Pivotal Conversation. Recommendations: The suggestions given would be to continually enhance the utilization of the Three Key Leadership Arenas in order to maintain the highest expectations for improvement in Head Start Leader's development for the future of those they serve.
