Abstract
In the area of global poverty, business is often cast as the villain. We propose that business is uniquely qualified to play the role of hero, if business leaders are grounded in the understanding that global business can make money while simultaneously addressing the three critical needs areas that will enable people around the world to escape abject poverty: health, education and finance. Based on current scholarship, we propose that collegiate educators adopt a five-phase, incremental educational model such that management students can develop into global leaders. Over five phases, students grow in leadership awareness and global consciousness, working to address the three critical need areas. We outline a comprehensive programme that integrates service learning and social responsibility into a cohesive management curriculum.
