Ben Jonson's bawdy references in "The Alchemist" to a melted candle and a 'madam' are important symbolic references to the play's themes of depiction and immoral behavior. Other plays from the same era similarly link prostitution and deception. Despite the obvious bawdiness of this text, the images are actually carefully chosen metaphors used to underscore these themes.
