Abstract
The impact of an externally imposed organizational restructuring on role perceptions, satisfaction, and relationships among organizational members was examined using a simple pre-post natural experiment without repeated measures. Randomly chosen from a large Midwestern organization, representative samples completed the annual employee opinion survey at 2 points in time. About one year before the restructuring process was mandated officially, 3,246 employees completed the first survey, and 2,627 completed the 2nd survey, administered 3 months after the mandated restructuring effective date was determined. The organizational restructuring was not shown to significantly influence company/job satisfaction, role clarity, role overload, and the relationship with the supervisor. However, for respondents with less than one year on their current job at the time of the 2nd survey, the restructuring did influence satisfaction with supervision and security.
