Biography

In addition to a wealth of experience in academia, including prior teaching assignments at Howard University and the University of Southern California, Valerie also has a wide background in broadcast journalism. She has served as a producer and writer for CBS News on shows such as “48 Hours,” “Sunday Morning” and “Eye to Eye with Connie Chung;” Channel One News in Los Angeles and WPLG-TV in Miami. She has also been a reporter for the Miami Herald. Valerie’s journalism work has earned her honors from the Houston International Film Festival, American Women in Radio and Television, PRISM and the Chicago International Television Competition, as well as a national Emmy nomination. Her research interests include the role of journalism schools as news providers, and the impact of AIDS on African American women.
