Abstract
Globalism has created a demand for organizational leaders who are sophisticated in international management and leadership strategies. The goal of this chapter, therefore, is to explore global leadership in contemporary contexts. The focus is particularly on the overlap of internationalism with, and its divergences from, multicultural (diversity) concepts in organizations. We argue that for the global organization to succeed, its leadership must invest significantly in embedding a global mind-set into the organization's culture. The role of leaders in creating an organizational culture that advances and supports globalism is elaborated. Alternative approaches to examining the globalization process and the diversity phenomenon within organizations are explored, along with issues in the integration of these approaches. Strategies and considerations are identified for leaders as they create the third culture-a negotiated organizational culture-in which globalism can thrive. Finally, issues and needs in globalizing leaders and organizations are discussed and approaches identified that are currently being used in leadership research across nations, governments, and industries.
