The First Negro Classic Ballet started by Joseph Rickard, a White, for helping blacks who were not allowed to attend the regular ballet school, provided them a unique means of expression during a critical era of social change in America. The ballet accomplished much more than beautiful dancing by serving as an example of multiethnic interaction in the arts in postwar Los Angeles.
